  • The 2026 Spring Outing will be Dunsink Observatory, New Grange and the Boyne Valley, It will take place earlier than usual, in March. This is due to a special guided tour at Dunsink Observatory which is available only on 19th March.   • Saturday morning workshops

    A programme of Saturday morning workshops is held at Tory Top Library, each workshop lasting two hours, with a start time of 11.00 a.m.   Eircode T12 WP57, see map below.  These are for Club members only.  Tea, coffee and biscuits are served.   • The 2026 summer solstice barbecue will be held at the Anglers on Friday 19 June.   For members plus one.   More detials will appear here nearer the time. The Anglers, Carrigrohane, is a riverside bar and restaurant ideally suited to our needs, which the Club has used before to general satisfation.  The photo is from our 2025  barbecue.   • Carl Edward Sagan (1934 –1996) holds a special place in the pantheon of science communicators.  He was an American astronomer and planetary scientist, held professorships at Harvard and Cornell, and is remembered for co-writing and narrating the 1980 documentary series Cosmos: A Personal Voyage, which, it is claimed, has been seen by 500 million people in 60 countries.   • The European Southern Observatory (ESO) is building the imaginatively named Extremely Large Telescope at Cerro Armazones, a mountain at an altitude of 3,046 metres in the central part of Chile’s Atacama Desert.   The main image shows the telescope structure to the same scale as Cork City Hall.  Whilst the bulk of the structure is now nearing completion, the next steps… “read more”


  • Two tours of the Crawford Observatory have been arranged for Club members — Saturday 21st and 28th February at 11:00 a.m.  Requests to join one of the tours to Jan Cap, who will be your guide.  The 21st is now fully subscribed.   • Exoplanets are planets orbiting stars other than our Sun.   Over 6,000 exoplanets are known, but only a small handful of them have been directly imaged.  Taking these photos pushes the limits of our technology, requiring the largest telescopes, advanced optics, and complex data analysis in order to separate the faint signal of the exoplanet from the overwhelming glare of the… “read more”
