October’s public lecture will be delivered by Alan Giltinan, the title: “Photometry, a means to peak at the universe”. Photometry is a technique used in astronomy that is concerned with measuring the characteristics of light radiated by astronomical objects, from which much information about the emitting object can be gained.

The speaker: Alan is Manager of MTU’s Blackrock Castle Observatory, and was responsible for scientific, technical and business start up of this internationally award winning facility., which has become a noted science, education and research centre. Small image above: Alan at Blackrock Castle.
Main image: the Hubble Space (HST) carries a wide array of instruments. The High Speed Photometer (HSP) is a scientific instrument formerly installed on the HST and designed to measure the brightness and polarity of rapidly varying celestial objects.
