  • Cork Astronomy Club members’ photos are on show at Blackrock Castle throughout May 2026.   • Are we alone in the universe?   May an answer lurk under the ice on some of Jupiter’s moons?   Explore the possibilities with Hans Huybrighs (small image) who calls his talk “20,000 Leagues Under an Alien Ocean”.  Hans is a research fellow in astrophysics at Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies (DIAS) .  Main image shows Jupiter’s icy moon Europa in 2022.… “read more”


  • Observers nights are held at Frankfield Golf Club, 8 p.m., on a Monday night towards the end of each month.  Members only.   The final meeting of the current season was held on 20th April. “read more”


  • The Club’s 2026 Spring Outing visited Dunsink Observatory, New Grange and the Boyne Valley, and was blessed with sunshine, hugely welcome after a month of rain.   23 members and friends took part.   • Saturday morning workshops

    A programme of Saturday morning workshops is held at Tory Top Library, each workshop lasting two hours, with a start time of 11.00 a.m.   Eircode T12 WP57, see map below.  These are for Club members only.  Tea, coffee and biscuits are served. One more workshop is planned this season — April 11th — Building a Telescope with a 3D printer.… “read more”


  • The 2026 summer solstice barbecue will be held at the Anglers on Friday 19 June.   For members plus one.   More detials will appear here nearer the time. The Anglers, Carrigrohane, is a riverside bar and restaurant ideally suited to our needs, which the Club has used before to general satisfation.  The photo is from our 2025  barbecue.   • Carl Edward Sagan (1934 –1996) holds a special place in the pantheon of science communicators.  He was an American astronomer and planetary scientist, held professorships at Harvard and Cornell, and is remembered for co-writing and narrating the 1980 documentary series Cosmos: A Personal Voyage, which, it is claimed, has been seen by 500 million people in 60 countries.   • The European Southern Observatory (ESO) is building the imaginatively named Extremely Large Telescope at Cerro Armazones, a mountain at an altitude of 3,046 metres in the central part of Chile’s Atacama Desert.   The main image shows the telescope structure to the same scale as Cork City Hall.  Whilst the bulk of the structure is now nearing completion, the next steps… “read more”
