“THEY SAY IT MIGHT RAIN – The Highs and Lows of Ireland’s Weather and Climate” – 8th Sept 2025

What’s even more important to Irish amateur astronomers than if Jupiter’s moons are all in a row?

The weather!

Meteorologists Evelyn Cusack and Séamus Walsh will open our new season of public lectures on 8th September with a talk entitled  “THEY SAY IT MIGHT RAIN = The Highs and Lows of Ireland’s Weather and Climate”.   Evelyn retired from forecasting in 2023 after 42 years with Met Éireann,  and the small image shows Evelyn as we remember her, giving the RTE tv weather forecast.

Main image:  a Copernicus Sentinel-3 image from 2 April 2025 provides a sadly rare, cloud-free view of Ireland and Britain.  The varied landscape is clearly visible from space, showing green lowlands and rugged moutains, along with sediment patterns in the surrounding coastal waters.  .

The speakers:  Evelyn and Séamus, both physics graduates, started their careers together as weather forecasters in Met Éireann in the 1980s.    They are co-authors of They Say It Might Rain – The Highs and Lows of Ireland’s Weather and Climate, due for publication in October.

Evelyn is best known from TV weather and has won several awards for science communication.  As the Head of the Forecasting Division she was in the National Emergency Group for the Red level events Ophelia and the Beast from the East. Evelyn also worked on unifying a storm naming system in Europe.

Séamus moved from forecasting into research as the agricultural and environmental meteorologist where he worked on the prediction of forest fires, blight and foot and mouth disease. His research interests later took him to climatology where he authored papers on Ireland’s past climate and went on to become Head of the Climate Division.

This talk draws on their vast knowledge and experience, both in Ireland and internationally, as well as their enthusiasm in explaining the vagaries of Ireland’s Weather and Climate.

Where and when:  UCC’s Ashley Cummins building (formerly known as Civil Engineering, near College Road entrance to the main campus).   8 pm, Monday 8th September 2025.  Please arrive 10 minutes early – or earlier if you wish to join our Club.  This is a public lecture, all welcome.  For UCC map go to Calendar
