“Cats, Newts, and OGs: the world’s most important telescopes” was the title for our public lecture on Mon 9 September. We welcomed Terry Moseley, widely regarded as Ireland’s leading amateur astronomer. This was the opening of our new seasopm and Tarry got us off to a flying start.
The optical telescope has been the single greatest invention in the development of astronomy, and although Galileo did not invent it, his first astronomical observations with his primitive home-made telescope opened the windows to the universe. Terry took us through the numerous new designs and improvements, that have emerged since then some almost beyond comprehension in their power. He covered the firsts, the biggests, the bests, in a story in which Ireland played its own significant role.

Where and when: UCC’s Ashley Cummins building (formerly known as Civil Engineering, near College Road entrance to the main campus). 8 pm, Monday 9th Sept 2024. Please arrive 10 minutes early or earlier if you wish to join our Club. For UCC map go to Calendar.
